Plea for granting immediate Environmental Clearance for Vizhinjam International Sea Port

The Issue

The Rs 5000 Crore Vizhinjam deep-water port and container transshipment terminal is the most important infrastructure project in Kerala. It has strong, widespread support from the people residing in the area and in the State of Kerala at large, as well as bipartisan political support. The general public has been waiting with bated breath over the last two decades for the project to come to fruition. The project is not only capable of generating massive economic activity, social development and employment generation but is of strategic importance to the Nation's economy and national security.

After receiving the vital Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance from the State-level Environmental Appraisal Committee (SEAC), the Vizhinjam project is currently awaiting environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The application was filed on 6th Sept 2013 and the project was taken for consideration on the meeting held on 21st Sept 2013. Due to the intervention of a few vested interests, the decision was postponed for further review. We would like to highlight to MOEF that the intentions of these parties are malicious and their assertions have no basis in truth, science or sincere concern for the environment. We would like to bring attention to the estemeed EAC committee of MOEF the points mentioned in the petition for speedy approval for the project and support to commence this landmark project at the earliest.

The project was granted Environmental Clearance by the Appraisal Committee of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India on December 3, 2013. Please stay tuned to the project by Liking its FB page - https://www.facebook.com/VizhinjamInternationalSeaport

Let's look forward to a new landmark for Kerala and India!
