The Issue

Gossip Grill has always been a cornerstone of the lesbian and LGBTQ+ community. It's a place to gather, feel seen, and have fun. But post-COVID, the music has completely lost what made this bar special. The current playlists sound like any straight club: R&B, EDM, hip-hop, reggaeton, on repeat. That’s music we can hear literally anywhere else.

Gay clubs (especially lesbian bars) are about lesbian artists and basic pop. That’s the culture. That’s what brings people together and fills the dance floor. We want the pop everyone knows and can sing along to: Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, 2000s pop, iconic hits that create joy and shared moments AND we want music by lesbian/queer non-male artists! We want Reneé Rapp, Chappell Roan, Hayley Kiyoko, Kehlani, Tegan and Sara, Lady Gaga, etc. played loudly and proudly. Where else are these artists supposed to be centered if not in a lesbian bar?

This isn’t a niche request. So many people are saying the same thing online and in person: the music has driven them away. We want fun. We want pop. We want music everyone can scream the lyrics to together. That’s what made Gossip Grill great, and that’s what will bring people back.

Of course, there are people who enjoy the current music, and they should still feel represented! I love that they support and include local DJs, and I truly think there is room for everyone and all genres of music, including what's currently being played. The community at Gossip Grill deserves a space that reflects its full variety. Pop and lesbian music should be played regularly, especially on weekends, so the bar continues to feel like the place people have loved for years.

Sign this petition if you want Gossip Grill to once again sound like a lesbian/LGBTQ+ bar.
