Friends opposed to Runaway Development in West Broward:
On Tuesday January 19, many of you showed up online for the PAHA Zoom Board meeting at which time representatives from Lennar appeared to attempt to sway opinion in favor of their 111 ATTACHED unit row townhome project. We were incredibly proud of each and everyone who attended and the cogent, learned and intelligent questions posed to Lennar's land planning team. Bottom line, when the Chair requested of the 60+ attendees, who wanted to speak in favor of the project (after listening to the Lennar presentation) NOONE spoke. This was one of those times when you literally could hear a pin drop. Silence. Crickets. Nada.
Most of you will remember that on December 2, the Planning & Zoning Board Chair, Jeremy Wehby, required Lennar to meet with each homeowners' association to discuss reducing the massive scale of the project to meet the underlying land use plan. (from 111 ATTACHED units to 3 density units to the acre or 39 total single family DETACHED units). Instead, Lennar's representatives attempted to throw up misleading traffic data (which when examined, actually proved the case for a 39 single family DETACHED home unit development versus a multi-family 111 ATTACHED unit row townhome project). There was even talk of buffering Hiatus Road from the proposed development - which translates to, 'let me plant some tall hedges so you won't see the noxious project I'm actually trying to get away with and so I can divide and conquer your massive and meaningful coalition.' Ie., if the Acres folks are mollified, I can peal them away from the rest and make this a case of only one home community against our project. That transparent attempt backfired. By unanimous vote, the PAHA Board voted against the project and will issue a PROCLAMATION to The City of Plantation Council memorializing the entire community's (of Plantation Acres) opposition to the project. We couldn't be more proud of our stalwart neighbors in the Acres. Following this, on the same Zoom call, Westport HOA's Board President(s) announced they would follow suit and we also believe a similar PROCLAMATION will be forthcoming to the City of Plantation Council opposing the project.
The fight continues. On Tuesday January 26, Lennar is sponsoring a Zoom call with several other associations, including Westport HOA and others. We would ask that you sign up and appear on this call as well to let all your voices be heard! As you already know, on February 2, the Plantation Planning & Zoning Board will meet to deny or approve the Lennar Project. As soon as we receive those Zoom coordinates from the City, we will provide you all with an immediate update an an easy method to sign up and attend that Zoom meeting.
The end is in sight. Please continue the fight. It's noticeable in all these Zoom calls, no one has spoken up for this horrible precedent other than one person who possibly stands to materially benefit from the work. Ask yourself when you hear a voice in favor of this inane project, what do they have to benefit? It certainly isn't the betterment of your community.
