We are nearing the finish line.  Much has been written about the exigencies driving the horrid 110 unit barracks style row attached townhome debacle at Hiatus & Broward.  Very little has been discussed about the special communities surrounding it.  I would like to invite each of you to share a little about what makes your own community special because, along this pitched battle, we often refer to arcane language such as an "underlying land use plan" or "density - units per acre" but we rarely take the time to ferret out what that means to each of you.  To give it some historical perspective consider that back in 1974 when Gulfstream Land Development recorded its DRI (development plan for Jacaranda and West Plantation), it was only the third such plan on record in the State of Florida.  It truly was a historic and formidable plan.  The Gulfstream DRI won numerous national land planning and architectural design awards for its prescience and insight.  The communities that sprung out of the DRI are now legendary:  Jacaranda, Jacaranda Lakes, Westport, Plantation Palms, Hawks Landing and many others.  In reflection, the history of all this struck home yesterday when I was on a Zoom call with a resident.  We were addressing a matter of importance to the Community and to his own family, when he stated (and I paraphrase):  "This is my home.  I intend to live here until I die. Then, my kids will inherit it and they will live here. That is how special I feel about it and this community."  His words brought tears to all of our eyes as he confirmed what we try to do on a daily basis which is to make the community, a home that people from all over the World can be proud of and that they will live in for a very long while.  Over the years we have taken part in marriages, Britot, Christenings, and yes, we have grieved in death when a beloved resident or HLPOA/RHSS staff/contractor has become ill or passed.  This is what it means to live in a community.  We take pride in the fact that the plan that began in 1974 resulted in living and functioning home communities today.  Often, in the rush of discussing minutiae such as "density and scale and compatibility," we forget what that really entails. Our own families were raised and live in our own developed communities. We are proud of that.  Let's continue the tradition and send the message that no one (not the School Board nor its agent or lobbyist(s)) should be able to take that away from us.
