One acre of pollinator-friendly habitat is equivalent to 600 6’x12’ backyard gardens. The arrays installed usually equal to more than 6,000 backyard gardens. This is an incredible opportunity to create habitat - for our bees—but also for all pollinators.
USDA reported that there were 1,178,800 hives located in North Central states during 2016/17. Beekeepers in the Midwest lost over 45% of their bees this past year. Minnesota beekeepers lost over 50% of their colonies. (BIP data for all states)
That means that 533,289 colonies are annually dying in our region. It totals about a $107 million dollars annual loss. Imagine that—losing over half of your livestock every year. Native pollinators are also suffering, but are harder to count.
Providing healthy habitat is one of the greatest ways to help. Planting solar farms with pollinator-friendly, pesticide-free, native, blooming plants is a smart, multi-use of the land benefitting agriculture, the environment and the community.
