Why this petition matters

Started by Leeman Road Residents' Association

The Jubilee on Balfour Street, York, has stood derelict for several years. What was once a thriving venue has become a shell of its former self, with windows being smashed, people breaking in, and litter being strewn around the site and surrounding streets. A valuable community asset has been transformed into an eyesore and safety risk.

This needn't have happened. Instead of attempting to run the venue as a pub the property owner wants to convert it into apartments, depriving the local community of a valuable spot to socialise and hold events; in the process they have allowed it to fall into disrepair. The City of York Council have twice rejected these applications as the property has an attached use where it must contain a pub, and the developer's plans do not contain a venue of any size that could be reliably run as a public house.

The developers have now appealed to the Planning Inspectorate to try and overturn the council's decision. The Leeman Road Residents' Association plan to speak at this meeting and hopefully see the appeal quashed. With a full pub bar and function room the Jubilee would be a perfect place to hold community events, and eventually we want to see the Jubilee restored to its former glory as a thriving local run by the local community, for the local community.

We're asking you to support our bid to preserve the Jubilee in the hands of the local community and re-establish it as a local landmark.
