SAVE TAL-QARES ONCE AND FOR ALL!

SAVE TAL-QARES ONCE AND FOR ALL!
The Issue
On 18 Nov. Malta Today reported that Malta's Planning Authority received an application for a new supermarket to be developed at the archaeological site of Tal Qares, 60 m from Mosta's existing LIDL supermarket. As the paper reports, "a catacomb with three chambers, four tombs – some of which consist of double chambers – and a pair of cart-ruts" have already been found on the site of the proposed development. Also found in this vicinity:
* Features typical of Middle / Late Bronze Age eras
* The remains of a kiln, probably early Roman
* Five ancient water cisterns
* Numerous vine trenches
Any new development also threatens to further dwarf and undermine the structural integrity of the nearby 1657 St. Andrew's Chapel, as well.
Human civilization should not be destroyed for the sake of shopping!
Furthermore, such a structure would result in the uprooting of 22 trees, including two indigenous Maltese Aleppo Pines, which, according to the Environment & Resources Authority, were nearly eradicated in the 20th century and are a protected species.
Such a valuable cultural and natural site must be protected at all costs.
This entire area must be declared ODZ, once and for all!
Please also take the time to send an email to the following stakeholders, respectfully voicing your concern:
The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage: heritage.superintendence@gov.mt
H.E. President of Malta: president@gov.mt
Hon. Prime Minister of Malta: robert.abela@gov.mt
Hon. Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government: jose.herrera@gov.mt
Planning Authority: representations@pa.org.mt
Suggested wording for email:
I am writing as a concerned citizen regarding further proposed development to be conducted at tal-Qares in Mosta. Several archaeological remains have been found on this site, including a catacomb and cart ruts. Furthermore, the uprooting of 22 trees, including two Maltese Aleppo Pines would cause further harm to Mosta's shrinking natural environment. The protection of Malta’s open spaces, cultural and archaeological heritage is for the well-being of all, and we ask you to declare this area ODZ.
Thank you kindly,
