Why is the DeWitt General Hospital and its Theater Important?

  • DeWitt General Hospital was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in all three national register criteria.  It is also a contributing site on the Latinos in 20th Century California multiple properties state historic site listing.

  • DeWitt Hospital is one of the last remaining WWII Army hospitals of its kind, a Type A army general hospital designed by the notable firm of York & Sawyer.
  • DeWitt Hospital was critical to the Auburn, CA economy and community as a military and subsequent state mental hospital.  The DeWitt Hospital complex is a notable landmark in the Auburn area as it was the area’s major employer and its theater, chapel, swimming pool and auditorium often served as recreation facilities for the local community. 
  • DeWitt Hospital was the studio and residence of acclaimed artist Martin Ramirez.  Ramirez is considered to be one of the greatest self-taught artists of the 20th Century.  DeWitt Hospital is also associated with Dr. Tarmo Pasto who was one of the early pioneers of art therapy.

Why is the DeWitt General Hospital Historic District Endangered?

Placer County has developed a master plan encompassing the DeWitt General Hospital site and adjoining government center property.  The preferred option in the EIR for this master plan identifies 35 of the 50 historic DeWitt Hospital buildings for demolition, including the theater, auditorium, gym and swimming pool and patient wards.The Placer County Board of Supervisors is expected to approve the master plan and EIR at their April 9, 2019 meeting.

Know the Facts

  • The DeWitt General Hospital buildings were constructed as permanent structures.
  • A 2017 Building Facilities Assessment shows that nearly all of the DeWitt Hospital buildings are in sound structural condition.

How Can You Help?

  • Sign this petition urging the Placer County Board of Supervisors not to approve the EIR and master plan and to consider the alternative plans that preserve more buildings.
  • Email a letter to the Placer County Board of Supervisors before Tuesday, April 9, 2019:
