As a resident of Johnsburg, IL and a concerned parent, I am deeply invested in the safety and well-being of our children when they are at school. At the end of last school year our community faced a threat that highlighted vulnerabilities in our school security measures. After the incident this week, it has been a wake-up call that underscored the urgent need for more robust safety protocols.   One solution that stands out is placing a law enforcement officer in every school building in Johnsburg, IL, for every day that students are in attendance. This measure not only aims to deter potential threats but also seeks to build positive relationships between students and police officers. The presence of a police officer can create a safer environment for children, providing both a sense of protection and a critical line of defense in emergency situations.   The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) has stated that the presence of officers in schools can help mitigate risks and improve responses to various safety issues. They also found that officers who build rapport with students can foster positive perceptions of law enforcement and can be instrumental in preventing incidents before they occur.   In addition, studies have shown bullying often begins in the lower grades when children notice each other’s differences. A survey of 20,000 students in the United States found that 22% of third-grade children reported being bullied two to three times a month or more, with fourth and fifth graders close behind at 20% and 17%, respectively.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 9% of elementary schools reported bullying occurring among their students. The largest percentage of children involved in bullying behavior are third graders — one in four children report bullying someone else, being bullied, or both.   In 2021–22, about 19 percent of students ages 12–18 reported being bullied during school, which was lower than the percentage who reported this in 2010–11 (28 percent).In 2021–22, among students who were bullied, 22 percent reported that the bullying happened online or by text.   This initiative is not just about responding to threats and bullying but it’s about proactive prevention and education. Having law enforcement on site would work in tandem with our educators to address safety concerns, provide mentorship to students, and conduct educational sessions on important topics like cyber safety and substance abuse.   Funding this initiative could be supported through a combination of local government allocations and grant programs dedicated to school safety. Engaging with local law enforcement and community leaders to draft a sustainable plan is crucial.   Now is the time to take action. Let's prioritize the safety of our children and the peace of mind of our community.
