Place a hold on Trinity Lutheran Church historic landmark designation
The Issue
I have been a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Downtown St. Petersburg, FL for many years. This church has been more than just a place of worship to me and countless others. It is a vibrant community hub where people gather, support one another, and grow both spiritually and socially. The needs of the church continue to evolve and options must remain open.
Recently, there has been a proposal to designate our beloved church as a historic site. While preserving history is undeniably important, I believe that this application needs careful reconsideration before any irreversible decisions are made. A historic designation, though well-intentioned, comes with many restrictions and constraints that might limit our church's ability to adapt to future needs and community growth.
The designation may impact our church’s operations, potential renovations, and expansions that are necessary to accommodate our congregation's evolving demands. A hold on the historic designation application will allow our church community to have a thorough discussion on this matter. It will ensure that we consider the voices of everyone who is a part of our church family, as well as the larger St. Petersburg community.
Without this pause, we risk being unable to meet future needs or engage in necessary updates that maintain the vibrancy and relevance of our space. Such a designation could limit our capacity to serve not only our current members but also foster growth in the wider community.
I urge local decision-makers to place a temporary hold on this historic designation application. This pause would afford us the time to engage in dialogue about what is best for our church’s future while respecting its historical significance. Please join me in signing this petition to ensure that Trinity Lutheran Church can continue to serve its congregation and community effectively for generations to come.
