Postponing Pinellas County Graduation 2020

The Issue

As a graduating senior at St. Petersburg High School, I am extremely disappointed by Pinellas County School's decision to make this year's graduation commencement virtual. We have waited thirteen years to walk across the stage and mark this momentous life transition and are now being denied this opportunity. While I understand COVID-19 has made an in-person graduation impossible at the end of May, I feel that the majority of students would prefer postponing the ceremony for a later date (in June, July, or even August) rather than resorting to a virtual celebration. Surveys in Duval County, Seminole County, and Polk County all found that an overwhelming number of students favored a delayed, in-person graduation compared to one online; I think that Pinellas County would not differ from this trend. Thus, I am asking for the Pinellas County School Board to consider postponing our graduation ceremony rather than hastily deciding to make it virtual. While we appreciate the efforts to keep the celebration on-time, COVID-19's trends are very uncertain, and certain social distancing rules could be lifted in this county by the summer. We would all greatly appreciate and benefit from a proper graduation that can be celebrated with friends and family. Please pass and share to all Pinellas students affected by this decision.Thank you!
