Good afternoon Piedmont Airport Authority Board members.
My name is Nicky Smith and I am sure you know who I am because I represent more than 6,000 individual petition signers, a furry of social media, a number of daily letters to the editor at the New and Record, a social media outpouring, stories in a number local and regional news papers including news reports from WFMY 2 News.
The 6,000+ signatures on the petition is just a small sampling of those that are outraged by this name change. I was at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem this weekend where my father lives and spoke to some senior residents that did not know about this and they also express their disapproval of this name change. Most of them do not have access to social media that the 6,000 have signed. If I were not just one individual and had a marketing budget to combat this name change I am sure I would have more than 100,000 individuals in this local area that also would oppose this name change.
More important is I have lived my life between Winston-Salem and Greensboro and proud to tell others I am from the Piedmont Triad. This name is part of the communities DNA and your proposal to change the name of our Airport has hit a sensitive nerve in the citizens you have been appointed to represent.
You have heard the outpouring of negative comments about your name selection and your Executive Assistant publicly stated on January 11th that you have listen and put the brakes on your vote from your December meeting. I thank you for this quick response.
The common theme to these comments is there is nothing broken or wrong with the name of the Airport, PTI, Piedmont Triad International Airport.
The name you proposal NCCIA was simply laughed at by many thousands
In response publicly to Mr Webb’s email to me stating “I am not moved by the actions of a few uninformed.” I would have to state back to him that “6,000 is not a few, and they are not uninformed” as it does not take a marketing expert to understand what our regional airport name should be and what it represents.
I urge you not to waste your budget dollars on trying to come up with a different name that you feel might possibly attract new business.
We, and thousands others are the Piedmont Triad and proud of it and ask you put a permanent stop to any name change.
In closing, I know than some of the Board members have served multiple terms and might be on the Board in a expired capacity. I do not know the protocol for your appointment but ask that you reach out to the elected politicians that have appointed you to the Board, and nominate me to service on the Board such that I can bring my personal experience as business owner and local citizen to serve on this Board.
Thank you
Nicky Smith
