It’s been interesting to follow discussion about the airport name change. I imagine there has been considerable handwringing among community leaders involved in the decision, likely made more difficult by the apparent desire to satisfy the entire region.
I’ve heard, “It’s not that big a deal; we’ve got so many other things to worry about.” I disagree. Details matter. They are part of our brand and our identity, especially to visitors.
To our credit, Greensboro has a longstanding habit of collaboration in decision-making. It is how we demonstrate respect for each other and is one reason why we excel at hospitality and community generosity.
However, sometimes collaboration and compromise result in mediocrity. Then it looks as if we ourselves are mediocre (and we are most certainly not). Let’s make a decision that aligns with the experience our visitors have when they use our airport, not a confusing, mediocre compromise like this one.
As Tom Imbus said in his Dec. 26 letter, the flight information sign reads Greensboro, the gate agents and flight crew refer to the destination as Greensboro, and pilots communicate with the Greensboro tower for instructions and clearance.
If it has to be changed, call it Greensboro International Airport.
