Black Lightning on The CW had been canceled after their fourth season, but CW ordered a back door pilot for fan favorite, PAINKILLER. The back door pilot premiered as episode 7 on season 4. Painkiller would follow Khalil as he leaves Freeland City for Akashic Valley in the hope of turning over a new leaf and burying "the darker, devastatingly lethal Painkiller part of his persona." During the announcement of the CW 2021- 2022 upcoming shows, the Painkiller spin-off, along with others, fans have been asking for were not picked up. The Hollywood Reporter announced that the spin-off will be shopped around by Warner Bros. TV to be picked up by other networks, including HBOMAX.
