PIAA District 1 - Let the Young Men and Women Play

PIAA District 1 - Let the Young Men and Women Play
The Issue
We as Parents want fall sports to continue for our children. LET THEM PLAY, and let the parents to decide what is best for their children.
While we appreciate the difficult position you are all in we urging you to please consider the information below before making any decisions or to reconsider previous decisions.
We understand that you are doing your best to keep our kids safe, and we appreciate your efforts. However, it seems that some decisions are being based on “what if” scenarios. It’s like giving a kid a scholarship for sports and then taking it away because you “think he or she might get hurt” or giving an academic scholarship and then taking it away because “they may not study as hard in college.”
As parents, we should be making the decision, factoring the risk/reward, and doing what’s best for our kids. We understand your concerns with liability. The solution is to have parents and students sign a liability waiver. It’s a simple and effective solution. Parents and athletes can then choose to sign based on their personal preference, but it should be an option given to all. The risks of Covid as compared to the emotional suffering and mental distress these kids are experiencing, is infinitesimal. Our Seniors, especially, will never get this year back. As a parent, as we are sure you understand, this is heartbreaking.
As far as “adjusting the season,” ... THIS is the time to play. Unlike months from now, we know the numbers. Delaware county numbers are down (below 5%) as far as the state is concerned. We have heard some rumblings from people “If schools aren’t open, we can’t have sports.” Yes we can. Children have been playing sports all summer, including contact sports. They have played in tournaments with kids from around he country, with no issues. School sponsored sports are even safer to play because they are localized and controlled by district mandated safety protocols. We don’t know what the future will hold. Kids will be coming home from college, people will travel for the holidays, and “later’ in the year moves into flu season. It could be worse. It would be devastating to have kids hanging on to HOPE, and then in a few months, crushing them, yet again. I can only imagine how that will effect their grades, motivation for college, study habits and overall mental health. Let the parents decide what is best for their children and determine what their comfort level is.
You, as administrators, ADs, coaches, and board members can make the decision to allow fall sports. PIAA has already done so based on data and medical considerations. Other districts are doing it. It is time that the. Central League do the same. LET THE CHILDREN PLAY.
