The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario needs to protect its membership
The Issue
We are writing to express a grave concern in the manner in which a complaint filed against Dr. Nili Kaplan-Myrth was handled by the CPSO.
The College failed to act decisively to protect one of its members from a complainant who by any reasonable measure was perpetrating a hate crime. Words such as “Nazi” and “slut” are totally unacceptable, and under any pretexts.
The complainant also had threatened to kill Dr. Kaplan-Myrth. Rather than immediately inform Dr. Kaplan-Myrth that she was in grave danger, the CPSO elected to inform her eleven days after they’d received the letter thereby placing her, her staff and her family at serious risk.
At no time did the CPSO inform the RCMP; rather, they suggested that she inform the RCMP.
It is for these reasons, we request that the CPSO:
1. Apologize to Dr. Nili Kaplan-Myrth for its delay in informing her of serious threats and for its inaction to ensure her protection
2. Draft and publically adopt a zero-tolerance policy to protect its membership from complainants who use language that is hateful, racist, misogynistic, or anti-Semitic.
A zero-tolerance policy isn’t simply about protecting physicians. It’s very much about protecting the public. When any individual is threatened using such language, everyone in that civilized society is threatened as well.
