In solidarity with physicians across the state of Texas, we, the doctors, nurses, doctors-in-training, and other health advocates of the El Paso Region wish to denounce the crowded and unsanitary conditions of ICE migrant detention facilities, particularly as they stand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our censure comes from a neutral position, based solely upon the ethical principles of medicine, that all people deserve the right to safe conditions and the mitigation of exposure to lethal pathogens, particularly while in custody of this great nation. We cannot stand by and watch other human beings be placed in harm's way when means exist to decrease risk, not only for those individuals in detention, but also for the communities in which they exist. Therefore, we demand that detained asylum seekers, refugees, and nonviolent immigrants be released to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in ICE detention facilities.
