Please introduce an immediate embargo on arms to Egypt and other countries where arms sales provide support for repression.
The Issue
Peace Hub is a new project in Birmingham city centre, to help the public take action for peace & justice. Our first theme is the arms trade – please sign our petition calling for an arms embargo to repressive regimes. Find out more and add your ‘EMBARGOED’ stamp to our giant ‘arms export licence’ by popping into Peace Hub, Birmingham, B4 6AF any weekday between 11:00 and 14:30.
The military regime in Egypt violently repressing peaceful protest, yet the UK continues to sell arms to Egypt. In fact, Campaign Against Arms Trade reports that there has been a significant increase in the arms export licences to Egypt granted by the UK government since 2011. Furthermore, Egypt is just one of many countries with poor human rights records that the UK approves arms exports to, including several identified as ‘countries of concern’ by the Foreign Office’s own human rights reporting.
Calls from the UK for governments to respect human rights are undermined by selling military equipment to regimes that abuse those rights. For the UK to honour its policy of supporting “human rights, democracy and good governance around the world” these arms sales must stop.
Please sign our petition calling for an arms embargo – this petition is designed to complement the email & letter campaign on this issue by Campaign Against Arms Trade. If that’s inspired you, why not pop into Peace Hub to add your stamp to our giant ‘arms export licence’ and join with like-minded people in taking action for peace & justice.
