On Friday, September 4, 2020 the Rushville Animal Shelter was called to assist in the seizure of 30 ponies, donkeys, horses, and a bull due to alleged neglect. 2 of the 30 were already deceased on arrival, leaving the shelter with 28 needing immediate relocation and care. Since that time, the little donkey named Stitch that was shown in pictures on the shelter's Facebook page has died due to the horrific neglect/abuse/torture he suffered for so long. Currently, the owner of these animals, William A. "Gus" Haley, is only facing 10 charges and if the county does not move forward or the case is not pursued, he will regain custody of the remaining animals. Charges include 2 counts of (knowingly) torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal, 5 counts of cruelty to an animal and 3 counts of failure to properly dispose of a dead animal. There were 30 animals on the property, 2 were already dead and 1 died later. This man needs to be held responsible for each animal and the abuse/neglect/torture he is allegedly inflicted.
