The Issue

Dear Philadelphia Phillies,

I'm writing as a supporter who appreciates the team's role in bringing people together and representing the community with pride.

Please reconsider your partnership with Citizens Bank in light of concerns about its financial involvement with detention centers. Citizens Bank is the only bank loaning money to GEO Group and CoreCivic, owners of notoriously bad private detention centers across the country.

I encourage you to visit three of their detention centers in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area and see for yourself the way visitors and detained people are treated: Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark, NJ; Elizabeth Detention Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey; and Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania. If you are up for a longer trip, you can visit CoreCivic's Dilley Detention Center in Texas, famous for detaining children, most notably Liam Ramos, the 5-year-old boy in the bunny hat, from Minnesota.

Many Phillies' fans care deeply about human rights issues, and aligning partnerships with those values can strengthen the bond between the team and its community.

The Philadelphia Phillies have an opportunity to lead by example and reflect the compassion and integrity that so many associate with the organization:  DO NOT RENEW YOUR CONTRACT WITH CITIZENS BANK IN 2028.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this perspective.
