The Dumagat Tribe is in danger; Save Sierra Madre

The Issue

Sierra Madre Mountains is known to be the "backbone of Luzon" and is the longest mountain range in the Philippines. Kaliwa Dam or the New Centennial Water Supply Project is proposed by the Philippine government in the year 2012. The issue of the construction of Kaliwa Dam has been existing these past years because it will affect the Dumagat tribe who lives there. Its construction is not just affecting the said tribe, but also the Sierra Madre Mountains.

This dam project is located in General Nakar, Quezon to Infanta, Quezon and its tunnel traverses from the location of the dam to Teresa, Rizal. This is made to supply water to Metro Manila and the nearby provinces but, it is affecting people's lives and our environment. This project costs 12.20 Billion according to the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS). In 2019, the Dumagat tribe's leaders opposed President Rodrigo Duterte about this project but they still remained defeated. They also asked the president to treat them as humans because they will lose their homes and the Sierra Madre will be affected.

The Dumagat tribe's lives and the Sierra Madre Mountains — both of them are affected in this project. We know that this dam may be for the good of Metro Manila and the nearby provinces but we are risking lives of our fellow Filipinos just for this project. We should raise our voices to help those who are in need.

Save Sierra Madre. Save the Dumagat Tribe.
