Save Rizal Memorial Sports Complex: Save Manila

The Issue

Built in 1934, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) has been the site of many Filipino triumphs in sport. Not only it was built for the Far Eastern Championship Games, the precursor for the Asian Games, it was also destroyed by World War II and was rebuilt later, making it a historic place. The complex has hosted the Far Eastern Championship Games, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games, and other international and local matches and tournaments.

In 2013, Philippine Sports Commission has shown interests in selling RMSC to fund a new training center at Clark Field, Pampanga which will be the national sports center. Their first option was to sell the land to the Manila City Government. This will be okay if the city will keep the facilities, which are actually few of the, if not the, best facilities in the country. RMSC could be the city's and/or PLM's and UDM's training center. However, last November 23, news got out that the city government will turn Rizal coliseum into a mall, with the rest of the complex being in danger to be turned in a mixed-development. Earlier this year, SM Prime Holdings showed interests in redeveloping the nearby Harrison Plaza complex and talks between two parties have already started.

The nearby Manila Zoo and Botanical Gardens is one of the remaining green spaces in the Metro. In fact, the area where Harrison Plaza stands today was designated as a public park. However, the lot was reassigned questionably in 1970s. Redeveloping RMSC and Harrison Plaza would further endager Manila Zoo.

Rizal Memorial Stadium, Coliseum, and the rest of the complex are architectural and historical gems, as it is designed in Art Deco style and has hosted different international matches. It is not only a gem; it is a functioning and international class sports facility. This petition calls for the Manila City Government to improve the Sports Complex instead to be better and redevelop the Harrison Plaza-RMSC area into 60% open and green space. Paulo Alcazaren's proposal could be helpful.  (https://www.facebook.com/paulo.alcazaren/posts/10155513205614488
