Demand for a stricter implementation of Animal Welfare Act to stop animal cruelty

The Issue

Although many pets in the Philippines are loved and taken care of well, as much as one third of all pets, perhaps even more, are kept in conditions which in developed countries would be grounds for prosecution.

The Philippines does have a law in place called the Animal Welfare Act of 1998. It prohibits torture, but it does cover the care of privately owned animals. Your average homeowner who keeps a dog in terrible conditions will never ever be prosecuted or even called out, because abuse is both legal and common. Most people are unaware that chaining or caging an animal is considered abuse in developed countries.

However, animal cruelty is not just happening to pets, but also, to other animals in the industry because animals are currently used for: food - wherein livestock are confined in filthy conditions and force fed to grow larger; experiments, opponents of animal testing argue that experiments are inhumane and that animals should have rights; clothing, animals are sometimes skinned alive to preserve the quality of their fur, wool, hides, etc.; entertainment, these animals are forced to perform tricks and are physically punished when they fail.

Animal Cruelty has been prevalent in the Philippines, even though there is an existing law that protects animal rights, this is not strictly implemented. That is why, we, as an animal rights advocates, want you to sign this petition to call the attention of our governments officials, animal organizations, and other advocates to stand firm in this advocacy: A demand for stricter implementation of the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 to stop animal cruelty!
