There are 30 million drivers in the UK, many of whom use their car each day for commuting to work, transporting their families and carrying out social activities. In a report from 2013, that equates to 83% of all distances travelled by people in the UK vs 17% who used rail, bus and other public transport.

For most of us, fuel prices are at the top of the list for monthly budgeting and economising our daily lives. And while fuel prices today aren't as offensive as they have been in recent years, many of us are forced to plan our journeys around petrol filling stations which offer the best price per litre.

I don't think that's right, and I'm sure many feel the same. If so, read on...

If you sign this petition, which, is directed at Teresa May's Chancellor of the Exchequer - Philip Hammond. We are asking for fuel prices nationwide to be standardised at the lowest possible price-per-litre.

While most filling stations in urban areas are competitive on price, some base their price-per-litre on the captive audience they are fortunate enough to have, such as motorway service stations. Many of which are charging 40% more than the average urban filling station for the same quality/brand of fuel. And it's not limited to motorway service stations, 1 station in Hampstead Heath is charging £1.47 per litre of Unleaded. Why? Because the locals are above average affluence! What about the rest of the population who funded that same road and therefore may need to stop along their journey to replenish their fuel level?

So, Three things that are likely to come up:

1) How will this be governed?

Individual businesses would have to claim that they require more margin from Fuel sales to sustain the business, by providing accounts showing unsustainable business performance. If they qualify, the extra £0.01pence - £0.04 pence per litre should be gained through a reduction in the fuel duty charged by the government. Note I'm not even mentioning the £0.40 pence per litre premiums charged by motorway service stations.

2) How will this work for the businesses who sell Fuel?

Most competitive fuel stations make a fair profit on their fuel sales while taking advantage of their footfall to make profit on other items such as Confectionaries, Newspapers/Magazines etc.. If they can support a business with limited local footfall and a low fuel turnover, then that should be plenty of financial support for the big, busy motorway service stations who's footfall is much higher along with a huge leap in fuel turnover. (If you agree with this petition, you too agree that the added i.e. 5% profit on 10'000 transactions is enough reward for a captive audience compared to i.e. 1000 transactions at 5% profit) - Number 3 is the real driving force behind our displeasure..

3) Lots of goods are at different retail prices in affluent areas around the country, why is Fuel different?

That's absolutely true! The big difference between most goods and fuel is choice: When you stop at a petrol filling station, you can choose to buy a premium packaged sandwich at £5, or not. It won't govern our daily lives. Fuel is a necessity! All motorists require fuel to get from A to B, so for giant organisations to entitle themselves to a premium on our daily activities is, in my opinion, offensive.

If it works, who knows. Maybe we will move on to the next offensive practice that causes daily debate and make that happen also!?
