Why this petition matters

Started by Pierson McCall

As we stand together in protest for:
·      the equality of black lives
·      the end of systemic racism and oppression
·      the end of police brutality
·      justice for those who have become victim of or have tragically lost their lives to senseless racism and/or police brutality
·      those to be held accountable for their oppressive actions against black lives

it has come to our attention that law enforcement officers have recently began to cover identifying statues of their uniforms while policing our protest. Many departments are exercising their use of a black “mourning crepe”, which is supposed to honor of officers fallen in the line of duty to cover their badge number. In many cities it is against policy for the crepe to cover seal/badge numbers. It seems that departments are over-looking this in an effort to protect their officers. This practice is giving them power to act against our many peaceful protests and know that they specifically cannot be held accountable for their tactical, lethal and illegal actions.

This petition is to call upon the commissioners, city councils, local government officials, and others it may concern to PROHIBIT the use of mourning crepes on identifying pieces of law enforcement’s uniform. This practice is a slap to our faces, as part of our protest is to hold those (including officers and other law enforcement) accountable for their criminal actions in instances such as the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile, and other black people whose lives have either been unjustly taken or violated. How can we hold these people accountable if they are allowing the use of crepes and bands to cover their identifying badge numbers, removal of nameplates, and other identifying objects? THIS PRACTICE MUST BE PROHIBITED!
