Progress in the NJ State Legislature
Oct 27, 2020 —
First and foremost, I'd like to thank you all for signing this petition to demand an end to no-knock warrants in NJ. It is with our collective voices that we make change, and every time one of us shares this petition or signs it, we help to amplify this progress.
I'm not sure why this didn't come up previously when I kept refreshing the news for no knock warrants in NJ, seeing as this bill was introduced in June this year, but either way, I wanted to share that there has been a bill addressing a block on no-knock warrants introduced in the NJ State Assembly!
NJ Bill A4286, introduced by Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly and Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, will prohibit both the issuance and execution of no-knock warrants in the state, if/once passed!
The specific wordings (the complete bill can be found at the link below) to outline the bill are as follows:
a. Prior to executing an arrest warrant at a residence or a warrant authorizing a search and seizure at a residence, a law enforcement officer shall: (1) knock on the door of the residence; (2) clearly and verbally announce the officer’s identity and the reason for the officer’s presence; and (3) absent exigent circumstances, wait a reasonable amount of time, but not less than 30 seconds, for occupants to answer the door, whichever is greater, before entering the premises.
So let's get contacting our assembly people and state senators to encourage them to pass this bill! You can check out the spreadsheet linked below to find the contacts of all the state senators and assembly people, and control-F to find your district if you're unsure of who you should be contacting.
