The Issue

Part of getting justice for George Floyd is taking action to make sure that no other black Americans die from police brutality in our country again. It is time that all Americans, regardless of your race, religion, sexuality, or gender, demand change. We must show solidarity with the black community.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." - Martin Luther King Jr.

The NAACP released a statement on Twitter (https://twitter.com/NAACP/status/1267244440965525505) and made several demands to hold police accountable:

  • A ban on the use of knee holds and choke holds as an acceptable practice for police officers.
  • The Use of Force Continuum for any police department in the country must ensure that there are at least 6 levels of steps, with clear rules on escalation.
  • Each State's Open Records Act must ensure officer misconduct information and disciplinary histories are not shielded from the public. Recertification credentials may be denied for police officers if determined that their use of deadly force was unwarranted by federal guidelines.
  • Implementation of Citizen's Review Boards in municipalities to hold police departments accountable and build public confidence.

Overall, we believe that these demands will help stop the use of excessive force. Additionally, we believe that making their history public is necessary for  communities to trust their police to do their jobs.

The key to making change is starting locally within our state of New Jersey. That is why we are calling on Governor Phil Murphy to meet this demand so that no more people die due to police brutality. He has expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement, so if he is an ally, he will accept these demands quickly.

The Decision Makers
