Phase out sale of meat and dairy produced from factory farms at Loblaw Companies Limited

The Issue

Factory farms have become the modern approach to raising livestock, specifically pigs, cows and chickens, through intensive methods in order to produce a surplus of food for cheaper costs. However, cheap cost comes at the expense of the animal's wellbeing, the environment, and human health.

Animals on factory farms suffer immense physical and psychological pain throughout their entire lives. They are kept in caged, crowded, inhumane conditions, and are routinely tortured. The only reason this level of animal cruelty is legal, is because of industry profit.

The stress of the unbearable living conditions causes disease to spread among the animals, which is counteracted through the use of antibiotics. The consumption of this meat has led to significant health concerns in humans, such as heart disease, cancer and antibiotic resistance.

This industry is a top contributor to environmental issues such as deforestation, biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions and an extreme quantity of energy and resources are lost in the production process due to the disproportionate input to output ratio.

It is essential for industry and society to move away from factory farming, and produce meat and dairy through sustainable, ethical methods.
