Zoos are constantly exchanging their animals for captive breeding. While they say this helps in conservation of this species, how can that be if they never ever release the animals into the wild? By continuously breeding elephants in zoos, all zoos are doing is increasing the population of zoo elephants. Once a calf is born in their zoo, they get to market the event and increase revenue by attracting more visitors. In order to phase-out elephant collections in zoos, we need to put a stop to captive breeding and let the current zoo elephants go to sanctuaries to live out their lives (or possibly look at some kind of rewilding if safe and possible).
