David Stock started this petition to PG County Parks and Recreation Department, the Planning Commission, The board of Trustees of the UMD

There is a plan to destroy the paint Branch Golf Course as we know it and replace it with a University of Maryland Athletics facility as well as a hodgepodge of community activities that are amply duplicated elsewhere throughout the county.

Please sign this petition to express your opposition to this plan to the PG County Parks and Recreation Department, the Planning Commission, The board of Trustees of the University, and the PG County Council.

It becomes difficult to comprehend the logic behind this proposal when as a society we should be looking to ways in which we can decrease emissions and increase green spaces to combat our changing climate.  This plan is going in the opposite direction and is in our opinion, socially irresponsible.

PG County only has 3 public golf courses.  If this plan goes forward that number will be reduced to two.  In comparison, Montgomery County has 9 public golf courses.  PG County residents pay one of the highest property taxes in the state. In other words the Prince George's taxpayer is being vastly underserved with respect to golf access.

Additionally, Paint Branch is the only walkable golf course in the area which provides much needed exercise for patrons, particularly seniors and children.  As the group hardest hit by the current Pandemic, seniors were grateful that Paint Branch was available to provide a vital outlet to support our mental and physical wellness.  Losing Paint Branch would be extremely detrimental to many who view it as a critical part of their healthy lifestyle.   This new plan does.

Viable Social and Environmental Conscience Alternatives:

Paint Branch golf course has 4 lakes and two rivers running through the property which host a huge variety of wildlife including birds, animals, insects, fish, amphibians, and a wide variety of trees, flowers and plants. And is part of the Anacostia watershed. It is the home of many Terrapins, a protected species of amphibian in Maryland. There are hawks (red tailed, osprey and even seen a bald eagle circling overhead) Deer, squirrels, ground hogs, foxes, raccoons, Possums... The list is extensive.

I strongly urge you to reject this plan!  Surely an alternate resolution can be found that supports the entire community without disenfranchising and displacing the Paint Branch patrons, especially families, children and seniors.
