Pets Are Family: Hold Vets Accountable!

The Issue

My world crumbled when my fur baby, my joy, was taken from me unexpectedly. I took him to the vet for a simple test, but instead, I left carrying the lifeless body of my beloved pet, a victim of glaring medical negligence. Like millions of other pet parents worldwide, my pet wasn’t merely property; he was a cherished family member, companion, and source of unconditional love.

But under the current laws, our pets, these sentient beings with their unique personalities and their capacity to love and feel pain, are classified as "objects" or "property." This outdated classification severely limits the recourse available to pet owners in cases of veterinary malpractice and wrongful death. A research from the Animal Legal Defense Fund indicates that veterinarians are rarely held accountable for their failures, and when they are, the penalties imposed are typically insignificant due to this current legislation.

This the stark reality we face today, as our precious ones are being let down by the very people we trust with their lives. It is time we respect their inherent value and bridge the glaring gap in our legal system.

We urge legislative bodies to acknowledge the invaluable emotional attachment we have with our pets and reassess their legal status. We demand better veterinary oversight and suitable liability in cases of malpractice and negligence.

Stand with us. Sign this petition to grant our animal companions the legal recognition they deserve and to ensure our vets are held accountable for their negligent actions in their care.
