We, the Australian Federation of Totally and Permanently Incapacitated Ex-Servicemen & Women (TPI), are asking the Prime Minister to restore the economic loss component of the Veteran’s Special Rate (SR) and TPI compensation payments to 100% of the minimum wage.
The Department of Veterans’ Affair’s disabled clients who are Compensation Recipients on or under 100% of the General Rate are able to continue in the paid workforce without loss of compensation. Whereas the Special Rate / Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (SR/TPI) disabled Ex-Servicemen and Women have, in the main, had their compensation package for the inability to remain in any form of waged employment made up from two components – compensation for pain and suffering (which is equal to the 100% General Rate) along with the ‘Economic Loss’ component. The ‘Economic Loss’ component is currently equal to approximately 65% of the minimum wage.
Disappointingly, independent research now shows that the SR/TPI payments alone have declined over many years. Research also reveals that the ‘Economic Loss’ component is now so deficient that it only rates at approximately 65% of Australia’s Minimum Wage. The graph below reflects some of this research.
We require the Government to immediately effect a structural adjustment to the Veterans’ Disability Compensation Payments to, at the very least, maintain a minimum wage level of compensation for the economic loss by the Veteran. This structural adjustment is necessary for DVA Disability Compensation to regain a relative standard of living and so as to remain relevant to the Australian community wage/income levels.
The people of Australia expect the Government to keep the Promise "that they will look after" Defence Personnel who are injured or wounded in the course of their duties protecting the Nation's Defences and Peacekeeping Operations.
Prime Minister have you forgotten what the Defence Force has done for the safety and security of you and your family.
If this inadequacy is addressed it will enable the most Disabled Veterans to live with Dignity & Self-Esteem
“It is a sad truth that we must not only fight to fill gaps in support for disabled Veterans, we must also be ever ready to defend that which we already have.” Blue Ryan, Past President, Australian TPI Federation
