PETITION: URGENT ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS FOR KEIGHLEY ROAD, ILLINGWORTH
PETITION: URGENT ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS FOR KEIGHLEY ROAD, ILLINGWORTH
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents and members of the local community, are calling for immediate action to improve road safety on Keighley Road in Illingworth, Halifax.
Keighley Road has become increasingly dangerous due to frequent incidents of speeding in a 30mph zone, resulting in multiple accidents. This is deeply concerning given that the area is surrounded by several schools, including Bradshaw Primary School, Abbey Park Primary School, Whitehill Community Academy, North Halifax Grammar School, and Trinity Academy Halifax.
Illegal parking in the cycle lane along Keighley Road is a persistent issue, significantly reducing visibility for residents attempting to safely join the main road from side streets. This creates a serious hazard for both drivers and pedestrians.
There is also a lack of safe pedestrian crossings, forcing children and families to cross a busy and dangerous road without adequate protection.
Despite repeated concerns raised by residents, little action has been taken.
On 18th March, our community was devastated by the tragic loss of three young men in a road traffic accident on Keighley Road. This heartbreaking incident highlights the urgent need for preventative measures to ensure no further lives are lost.
In light of this, and considering the recent £20 million investment awarded to the Illingworth and Mixenden area, we strongly urge that road safety improvements are prioritised.
We call for the following actions:
Installation of speed cameras along the full length of Keighley Road
Implementation of double yellow lines to prevent illegal parking and improve visibility
Installation of additional zebra crossings to allow children and families to cross safely
These measures are essential to protect the safety and wellbeing of residents, particularly children travelling to and from school.
We, the undersigned, support this petition and request urgent action.
