Petition to the WNBA: Demand Accountability for Poor Officiating and Player Safety

Petition to the WNBA: Demand Accountability for Poor Officiating and Player Safety
The Issue
To: Cathy Engelbert, Commissioner of the WNBA
Cc: WNBA League Office, Team Owners, and Media Outlets
We, the undersigned fans, supporters, and stakeholders of the WNBA, are writing to express our deep frustration and concern with the current state of officiating and the growing issue of excessive physicality across the league.
What began as concern over the treatment of Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has revealed a much larger problem affecting players, teams, and the quality of the game itself. Since Clark’s arrival, games have repeatedly been marred by inconsistent officiating, missed calls, and a lack of accountability for dangerous play. While Clark’s experience has been the most visible example — including repeated targeting and contact that jeopardizes her health — this is a league-wide issue impacting athletes on every roster.
The result is a style of play that too often crosses the line from competitive to reckless, leaving players vulnerable to injury and fans frustrated. The lack of fines, suspensions, and league statements condemning dangerous actions sends the wrong message — that physical intimidation is acceptable and that officiating discrepancies will go unaddressed. This not only threatens individual careers but erodes the integrity, sportsmanship, and credibility of the WNBA as a whole.
Instead of focusing on celebrating the incredible talent in the league, fans are left questioning whether the game is being officiated fairly, whether players are being protected, and whether league leadership is committed to upholding its stated values: respect, equity, and excellence.
We respectfully demand the following actions from the WNBA:
Comprehensive Review of Officiating Standards – including transparency around how officials are trained, evaluated, and held accountable.
Enforcement of Player Safety Measures – with consistent disciplinary action (fines, suspensions) for excessive, reckless, or dangerous play.
Transparency in Foul Discrepancies – clear reporting on how significant foul imbalances are addressed and corrected.
Commitment to Fair Play and Growth – protecting all players, regardless of team or profile, to ensure games are decided by skill and strategy — not unchecked physicality.
Failure to address these concerns risks alienating a rapidly growing fan base and stalling the momentum the league has worked so hard to build. The WNBA has an unprecedented opportunity to showcase the best of women’s basketball on a global stage. We urge you to act decisively — not just for Caitlin Clark, but for every player and the future of the sport.
