The issue

As a nursing student deeply passionate about transitioning into a full-time midwife role, I am gravely concerned about the inadequate pay rates that our nurses and midwives face here in Victoria, Australia. We are the backbone of the healthcare system, working tirelessly to ensure the well-being of our communities. Yet, many of us struggle with the rising cost of living, exacerbated by stagnant wages that do not reflect the critical importance and demands of our profession.

Nurses and midwives are essential workers who deserve more than just applause and gratitude. According to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, an average nurse in Victoria earns significantly less than their counterparts in other professions that require similar levels of education and responsibility. This discrepancy is not only unfair, but it also discourages dedicated individuals from entering or staying in the profession, thus exacerbating the already existing workforce shortages in the healthcare system.

A recent survey revealed that more than 60% of Victorian nurses and midwives consider their current wages inadequate, which in turn affects their mental and physical health. This is an alarming statistic that highlights an immediate need for action. The Victorian government must take steps to rectify this situation by increasing the salaries of these vital healthcare workers, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their exhaustive efforts.

Investing in our nurses and midwives is investing in better healthcare outcomes for our entire community. An increase in pay will not only acknowledge their indispensable contributions but also improve job satisfaction, reduce turnover rates, and attract more individuals to pursue this noble career path—ultimately benefiting patients through better-rounded care from a more robust healthcare workforce.

Join me in calling upon the Victorian government to prioritize the financial recognition of nurses and midwives. Sign this petition to demand a substantial pay increase for these indispensable heroes, ensuring they are not just surviving but thriving, while they focus on caring for us and our loved ones.
