For over 40 years, residents of the Lower East Rift Zone (LERZ aka KERZL  in Puna, Hawaii, have faced violations of 11 articles of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights due to unregulated geothermal drilling by Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV).

These activities have caused chronic illness, environmental damage, and denied communities their right to safety and well-being.

The Puna community is currently engaged in a lawsuit against the County of Hawai‘i and PGV, challenging a fraudulent Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) accepted by the County on January 22, 2024. This FEIS, which supports PGV’s Repower Project, is incomplete and fails to address significant environmental and health concerns, including unmonitored emissions and potential seismic risks. Despite community outcry and detailed objections, the County and PGV deny these issues, refusing independent monitoring and dismissing the concerns of a traumatized community as the case awaits review in the Intermediate Court of Appeals.

We demand immediate UN intervention to halt these violations, enforce transparent environmental monitoring, hold accountable those responsible, and restore the health and rights of Puna residents. The time to act is NOW—our community is suffering, and our voices must be heard. #AoLePGV
