Petition to the Government: Addressing the Fiscal Shortfall with Urgency and Equity

Petition to the Government: Addressing the Fiscal Shortfall with Urgency and Equity
The Issue
Petition to the Government of the Republic of South Africa: Addressing the Fiscal Shortfall with Urgency and Equity
Whereas:
- The Republic of South Africa is facing a significant fiscal shortfall, posing a threat to the stability and well-being of its citizens.
- The burden of economic hardship disproportionately affects low and middle-income earners.
- The current economic climate necessitates prudent and equitable fiscal management.
Therefore, we, the undersigned citizens of the Republic of South Africa, demand the following immediate actions from the government:
- No Additional Taxes on Low and Middle-Income Earners: We vehemently oppose any measures that would further burden the already strained financial resources of low and middle-income South Africans. The government must prioritise protecting these vulnerable populations from increased taxation.
- Suspension of Further VAT Increases: We demand an immediate suspension of any plans to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT). Such increases exacerbate the cost of living crisis and place undue pressure on essential goods and services.
- Immediate Implementation of Austerity Measures Regarding Public Servant Wages: We call for the immediate implementation of stringent austerity measures targeting the bloated public sector wage bill, commencing with significant reductions at the highest levels of government. This includes, but is not limited to, salary freezes, reductions in excessive bonuses, and a review of all non-essential benefits. The public sector must lead by example in demonstrating fiscal responsibility.
- Exploration of a Wealth Tax through Public and Academic Participation: We demand that the government, through a transparent and inclusive process involving public and academic participation, thoroughly explore the implementation of a wealth tax. This exploration must include comprehensive analysis of its potential impact, feasibility, and mechanisms for implementation. The goal is to ensure that those with the greatest financial capacity contribute their fair share to addressing the fiscal shortfall.
We further demand:
- Transparency and accountability in all government financial dealings.
- A clear and detailed plan outlining the government's strategy for addressing the fiscal shortfall.
- Regular updates to the public on the progress of these measures.
We, the undersigned, believe that these measures are essential for ensuring a just and sustainable economic future for South Africa. We urge the government to act swiftly and decisively to address the current fiscal crisis while safeguarding the interests of its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.
