The Issue

Our Oumas are suffering.

This is a call on the Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and the City of Cape Town to urgently review this unjust tariff policy and implement a fairer system that does not tie property value to electricity pricing brackets. It is time for our city's leadership to take decisive action in protecting its citizens from undue financial burden.

The current electricity tariff policy in Cape Town ties property value to electricity pricing brackets, causing significant hardship for many households. This policy particularly impacts pensioners who are now forced to make impossible choices between essential needs like food and electricity.

On 1 July 2023, the cost of electricity doubled for thousands of households across the city. Many lost their free units, further exacerbating their financial strain. This unjust system has left our most vulnerable citizens in a state of constant worry and distress.

The City's current approach is not only unfair but also unsustainable. According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), over a quarter of South African households spend more than 10% of their income on energy alone - a clear indication that energy costs are disproportionately high compared to household incomes. Well, many pensioners are having to allocate a large percentage of their income towards these expenses, leaving them with little to cover other basic needs.

The current tariff policy disproportionately affects vulnerable members of our communities, such as pensioners, who rely on the free units due to their low electricity usage. We urge Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis to exercise his executive powers to push for a review of the tariff policy and remove the clause that links property value to electricity rates.

It is imperative that affordability is considered independently from property value to ensure that all residents can access essential services without undue financial burden. Together, let us advocate for a fair and equitable electricity tariff system that prioritizes the well-being of all Cape Town residents.

By reviewing the policy, thousands of lives will be changed with just a click of a button.

By signing this petition, we stand united in calling for a comprehensive review of the electricity tariff policy to protect the most vulnerable members of our community. Let us join forces to ensure that our people are not starved of essential services but are instead supported and uplifted by fair and ethical policies.

Let's stand together in support of those who have given so much to our community throughout their lives. It's crucial that we provide an environment where our oumas can live comfortably without worrying about whether they can afford their next bill.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, please review this policy Sir. Because our people are not starving, they are being starved.
