PETITION TO TERMINATE THE VETO POWER HELD BY EEUU, RUSSIA, CHINA, UK AND FRANCE
El problema
THE VETO POWER HELD BY FIVE PERMANENT MEMBERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL MUST BE TERMINATED.
Campaigning to get this done is a priority to face what awaits us over the next decades. Collecting as many signatures as possible everywhere and namely among those citizens living in the aforementioned five countries would help us to gauge people’s determination, and maybe to give us some leverage over these matters. As a citizen and a commoner with no political influence, and because of the dire situation I can’t think of a faster and determined way to stop the carnage.
Whether it is to draw a plan for future actions or just to submit all these names to the world leaders our time won’t be completely wasted. They might be just names, but don’t forget that names mean people, that people can be organized and then turned into votes.
Gathering support as such is vital to cope with what lies ahead, first of all the too often dramatic state of war everywhere or the dramatic global fiasco to protect human rights, as well as the dramatic overpopulation that causes most of the worldwide overexploitation of resources and a dramatic biodiversity reduction, etc.
So many of these issues shouldn’t have ever happened had the United Nations worked properly to fulfill its first principle - to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war -. The side effects and outcomes of this failure are directly related to some of the claimed to be successful interventions that the United Nations are so proud of (humanitarian aid, decolonization, sustainability and climate change, etc.)
What is the main obstacle for this worldwide organization to not accomplish what was widely and broadly announced in its former statement? VETO; it is because of the bad use of this tool, always seeking personal interests and almost always hampering any progress towards peace.
Relying on professional politicians to figure out how to put an end to all this suffering and to face the challenges ahead under the same formula will yield the same result once and again as it has been happening for the last 70 years. Why not an alternative route or to put it differently, why not just new rules or a new order?
Could the situation worsen if we pushed a change forward? Indeed, it remotely could, but the question mark is, will we be better off living under this everlasting circumstance? Are you willing to endure the permanent standoff?
A new distribution of power, obligations and responsibilities must be agreed and rearranged.
Persevering is no longer an option, and taking some risks to move on instead of trusting a useless organization is worth trying.
¡wake up cabrones, wake up! Let’s do something or let’s at least pretend it.
No more delays.
PS: a quick reminder of United Nations inaction, lassitude or “successful” interventions along with the number of times the right of veto was exercised.
1946 - Greek Civil War, Wars of Independence and Decolonization in Africa and Asia, Paraguayan Civil War, Civil War in Palestina during the British mandate, Indo-Pakistani War. Arab-Israeli War, Korean War, Cuban Revolution, Vietnam War, Guatemalan Civil War, Rhodesian Bush War, Nigerian Civil War, Cambodian Civil War, Cyprus War, Ethiopian Civil War, Lebanese Civil War, Uganda-Tanzania War, Soviet-Afghan War, Nicaraguan Revolution, Salvadoran Civil War, Iran-Irak War, Falklands (Malvinas) War, Invasion of Grenada, Sri Lankan Civil War, Civil War in Sudan, Nagorno-Karabakh wars, Invasion of Panama, Liberian Civil War, Rwanda Civil War and the Genocide, Sierra Leone Civil War, Gulf War, Yugoslav Wars (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo), Chechen War, Congolese Civil War or Congo War, Eritrean.Ethiopian War, Somali Civil War, Afghan Civil War, Darfur Conflict, Irak War, Yemeni Civil War, Central African Republic Civil War, Russo-Georgian War, Civil War in Libya, Syrian Civil War, War in Ukraine, War against the Islamic State, Myanmar Civil War, Gaza, etc, etc, etc…, if we add another minor conflicts as Intifadas, insurgent groups or narcotraffiker in Colombia, México and so on - 2024.
