Petition to STOP the NCC's Housing Development on Sussex Drive, Ottawa

Petition to STOP the NCC's Housing Development on Sussex Drive, Ottawa
The Issue
We, the undersigned, oppose the National Capital Commission's misguided plan to build hundreds of rental apartments along Sussex Drive across from the Prime Minister's Official Residence and the French Embassy. This housing development would permanently alter the historic Ceremonial Route from Rideau Hall to the Parliament Buildings, destroy unique green spaces on Confederation Boulevard and undercut the historic character of New Edinburgh.
The NCC plan would:
- Be contrary to the NCC's mandate "...the NCC ensures that the distinctive streetscape elements of Confederation Boulevard are preserved and enhanced to maintain the unique character of this key feature of the Capital" (NCC website)
- Harm the environment by obliterating three substantial blocks of green space and destroying over 125 mature trees
- Destroy the heritage nature of New Edinburgh, which dates back to 1829 and has a heritage designation by the City of Ottawa
- Aggravate the already highly congested traffic on Sussex Drive, be a danger to cyclists and increase emissions from many more cars
- Worsen the already difficult parking in the neighbourhood
- A sizeable part of this land is on a flood plain, is building there responsible?
The NCC has NOT been transparent. It has not revealed the scale and scope of the project or even how many units are foreseen. The NCC maintains they "need the money".
We urge all Canadians to oppose this NCC development and sign this petition.
