Petition to Stop the Labelling of Cell-Cultured Products as "Meat"

Petition to Stop the Labelling of Cell-Cultured Products as "Meat"
The issue
To: Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and The Hon. Julie Collins MP, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
From: Concerned Consumers, Farmers, and Advocates of Transparent Food Labelling
Background:
Cell-cultured or lab-grown meat is a product created by culturing animal cells in a controlled environment. While these products may resemble conventional meat in appearance and composition, they do not involve the traditional practices of animal husbandry and farming. We do not want manufacturers or advocates pushing for these products to be labeled as "meat."
We believe this is misleading to consumers and undermines the integrity of traditional meat producers who have adhered to established agricultural and ethical standards.
We, the Undersigned, Petition That:
We, the undersigned citizens of Australia, call on Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the Federal Minister for Agriculture to protect the integrity of traditional meat products by prohibiting the labelling of cell-cultured or lab-grown products as “meat.”
These products, though derived from animal cells, are not raised through farming practices, and their labelling as “meat” misleads consumers and undermines Australian livestock industries.
Why This Matters:
Consumer Clarity: Many people associate “meat” with farm-raised livestock. Using the same term for cell-cultured products can cause confusion.
Fair Competition: Farmers and station owners who raise animals according to longstanding agricultural traditions should not have their products equated with laboratory-grown alternatives.
Cultural and Ethical Significance: The term “meat” carries cultural, religious, and ethical weight. Accurate labelling respects these values.
Our Request:
We urge regulatory bodies to establish clear, enforceable labelling standards that require lab-grown or cell-cultured products to be explicitly and distinctly identified from traditional meat. Let consumers decide with full knowledge of what they are buying and eating.
