Petition to Stop the Inhumane Culling of All Pigeons in Limburg an der Lahn, Germany

Petition to Stop the Inhumane Culling of All Pigeons in Limburg an der Lahn, Germany
The Issue
A town in Germany has decided to cull its entire pigeon population, resulting in the death of over 700 pigeons. This decision, which will be concluded by snapping the necks of hundreds of innocent birds, was decided simply and entirely on the basis of the pigeons being deemed annoying “sky rats”. Within the local vote, only 53% of 7,530 voters approved which shows this voting pool represents a narrow and misguided approach to urban wildlife management. By extending this vote to a larger global level, we aim to show that many people believe in more humane and effective ways of handling a town’s local pigeon population.
Why This Matters:
Culling is a cruel and inhumane method of controlling pigeon populations. It causes unnecessary suffering to the birds and does not address the root cause of the population issue. As a global community, we must strive to coexist with wildlife in humane and ethical ways. There are more effective and compassionate methods available. Pigeons are small, intelligent, and gentle birds who look to us for care and compassion. We must do better and solve any issues they create graciously and ethically. Snapping the necks of over 700 innocent birds simply because they are deemed unaesthetic is an act of cruelty that disregards their lives and suffering.
Besides the ethical considerations, studies have shown that culling is not an effective long-term solution. Pigeon populations often rebound quickly due to the availability of food and nesting sites. Rather than culling the pigeon population, it would be more ethical and effective to introduce the “Basel Model,” which, through reducing feeding (largely through public education) and removing eggs from lofts, has shown to effectively reduce pigeon populations by 50% within a few years.
Join Us in Taking a Stand!
We aim to gather at least 50,000 signatures to demonstrate global opposition to this inhumane practice and urge the authorities in Limburg an der Lahn to reconsider their decision. Together, we can advocate for more humane and effective solutions—and save the lives of many.
Please sign and share this petition to help protect the lives of the innocent pigeons of Limburg an der Lahn and promote humane treatment of all urban wildlife.
