The Issue

I have launched a petition against Newlands Developments Ltd applying to close Tamworth Road B6540 for 5 months between June - October 2026.

It is being proposed that Tamworth Road B6540 will be closed as there are plans to build a new industrial estate around the Netherfield Lane area. As part of this planning application they are being required to raise the height of the road.

The work is due to start in early in 2026, there will be severe disruption but the road will stay open. After Download Festival takes place in June, they are then seeking to fully close Tamworth Road B6540 between June - October 2026.

Shockingly, despite this having a huge knock-on impact on Derbyshire residents, DCC weren't consulted.

THE IMPACT

Education - Many children travel from Castle Donington and Shardlow to Long Eaton for their education (and vice versa) thereby accessing the B6540 with parents bringing them before their ongoing journey to work. There is potential for GCSEs to be disrupted.

Public Transport - Skylink will undoubtedly be detoured either up Derby Road/M1 or Wilsthorpe Road/M1. Therefore Sawley will have no service from Trent Barton for airport employees and those wishing to travel for work or pleasure. There has been no consultation with Trent Barton. My15 Airport service will undoubtedly have to detour thereby freezing out Sawley. Again.

Car Travel - Anybody who frequently travels down Tamworth Road B6540 to get to Nottingham, Derby or on the M1 will be cut off.  Adding a significant amount of time to a journey.

Businesses - There are many small businesses that will be impacted as much of their business is through passing traffic, eg Sawley Bakery, Lock House Tea Rooms or Kelly's Cafe. Some small businesses may not survive, others will increase their costs.

Flooding - Many residents have raised concerns that this is a well known floodplain. There are huge concerns about where the water will go and could this lead to houses being flooded. Was this fully considered by the planning committee upon approval?

Emergency Services/Appointments -

There is concern about all of our emergency services not being able to access Sawley which could result in terrible consequences.
There are also other human stories, including getting children to emergency health appointments and the impact this will have on funeral services.

OUR DEMAND

It is completely unacceptable for  Tamworth Road B6540 to be fully closed for 5 months. The road has to stay open and Newlands Development Ltd must rethink these plans to at least partially keep the road open.
