The Issue

I'm tired of dining in Chicago and finding a questionable surcharge on my bill—often labeled as an 'admin fee' or 'surcharge'—without any direct notice or explanation. Recently, I visited three different restaurants in a single week, and each charged me a 3.5% or higher admin fee.

These used to be “surcharges” but enough people wised up so they’ve rebranded to “admin fees”.

These fees, originally 3%, have been gradually increased without clear communication, with some fees up to 4%. Previously, tiny text at the bottom of the receipt suggested these fees were optional, but that transparency is gone. Restaurants are capitalizing on these hidden costs, essentially doubling down on manipulation and customer complacency to enhance their profits.

This disturbing trend sets a dangerous precedent, in not just this industry, but other businesses that may mimic it. A recent study found that 75% of diners felt negatively about additional restaurant fees. It's crucial for diners to be fully informed about what they're paying for, including knowing that these fees remain optional.

We are calling on the Chicago City Council to enforce stricter regulations on restaurants regarding these admin fees. Specifically, requiring all restaurants to disclose these fees clearly and prominently on menus and bills, and reinstating the choice to opt-out directly on the bill. Transparent pricing should be a fundamental right.

Public awareness of this issue is vital in putting pressure on restaurants to be upfront about their pricing tactics. No consumer should feel deceived or pressured into paying fees that aren't straightforward. Let's reclaim dining in Chicago and demand transparency from the establishments we support.

Join us in urging local legislators to take action. Sign this petition to protect consumers from hidden restaurant fees and ensure transparency in billing for all Chicago diners. Together, we can foster an honest and fair dining environment in our city.
