Today is the second reading of SB277, a hot-button issue where your efforts have already moved the needle.
A number of state representatives want to create a pass for polluters (agriculture, industry, and developers) through the passage of SB 277. This bill needs an overhaul; we need more restrictions - not less - in order to reduce the high cancer rate and leukemia clusters among our children in the state. We can support agriculture, cleaner industry, and responsible development while also providing protection to our health and environment - this is not an either-or.
Thanks to your outreach, House Representative Matt Commons has agreed to vote AGAINST this bill if it remains written as is, and he will be suggesting some changes. It’s not enough yet, but it's a start. Our representatives need to hear from us that this bill requires a complete overhaul, so contact them as soon as you can: Matt Commons (District 13; 317 232-9600) and Chris Campbell (District 26; 800-382-9841). Hearing from us at every step of the process, again and again, makes a real difference. Pat yourselves on the backs, too: you've earned a Vote of Support from Senator Deery and helped move House Representative Commons toward a "no" vote as currently written. But we need to keep up the momentum for one more week!
The third reading and final vote for SB277 could come as early as tomorrow or as late as next week (Monday–Thursday).
Today is also the day Mayor Easter has committed to responding to her constituents' many unanswered questions in writing! Will she deliver? Let's wait and see. Be sure to read the full article on Medium for all the details:
