Petition to Save the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI)

The issue

We invite all current students and alumni of Monash University, along with members of the broader community, to support and sign this petition.

We’re a group of Monash students and alumni who care deeply about our university’s role in creating a sustainable and just future. We urge Monash University to withdraw its proposal to disband the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI).

MSDI is the heart of Monash’s sustainability leadership, a globally respected institute that brings together researchers, practitioners, community leaders, and students to tackle climate change, social justice, and complex global challenges. Its interdisciplinary approach is not only visionary, but essential.

For many of us, MSDI was the reason we chose Monash University. MSDI’s programs, mentorship, and collaborative ethos define our learning experience and Monash’s reputation worldwide. Its global reputation for innovation and impact in sustainability sets it apart from any other university.

Disbanding MSDI would fragment its impact, weaken Monash’s standing, and contradict the university’s own Impact 2030 strategy and climate commitments.

We call on Monash University to:

1. Retain MSDI as a distinct, unified institute.

2. Engage students, staff, and stakeholders in transparent consultation.

3. Ensure continuity and visibility of MSDI’s programs and partnerships.

4. Reaffirm Monash’s commitment to sustainability leadership.

We love MSDI. We’re proud of it. And we refuse to see it erased.
