Shah Alam Community Forest Society started this petition to YAB Tuan Amirudin Bin Shari (Menteri Besar of Selangor)

We, the undersigned, demand for the IMMEDIATE STOP-WORK ORDER of ongoing development which is currently encroaching and destroying the perimeter of the forest. We also appeal for the GAZETTEMENT of Shah Alam Community Forest as a PERMANENT FOREST RESERVE for ecological, educational and recreational purposes.

Shah Alam Community Forest (SACF) is one of the last remaining urban forests in Selangor situated in Setia Alam, Shah Alam. It is home to diverse flora and fauna, including majestic lowland Dipterocarp rainforest trees and endangered gibbons. Tapirs have been reported to be seen here too.

Besides being a sanctuary for tropical wildlife, SACF is also a beloved hiking destination for local residents. Every weekend, many families (including children) and groups can be seen hiking inside this pristine forest up to the peak for a vista of KL City. Situated in the heart of urban Shah Alam, this forest effectively serves instill the love and care for nature in the next generation too.

Apart from that, Shah Alam Community Forest forms a critical wildlife corridor that connects the two remaining patches of Bukit Cherakah Forest Reserve. The long-term ecological viability of the plant and animal communities in Bukit Cherakah forest reserve depends largely on maintaining and enhancing functional connectivity between the north and the south of the reserve. This can be achieved by retaining the remaining largest and most important patch of unprotected forest - Shah Alam Community Forest.

Saving Shah Alam Community Forest will achieve these:
1) Provide a sanctuary and ecological corridor for wildlife in Shah Alam.
2) Mitigate flood and air pollution in its surrounding areas.
3) Provide pristine forest hiking trails for the well-being of the community.
4) Foster good community spirit as the trails are used and maintained by all regardless of race or religion.
5) Provide a safe and accessible avenue for urban children to experience nature and learn how to care for it.

Hence we urge the Selangor State Government to safeguard this precious forest immediately because once it is destroyed, no amount of money can ever get it back.

Action taken:

26/12/2018: Letter of Protest sent to the Menteri Besar of Selangor YAB Tuan Amirudin Bin Shari cc to the Prime Minister, relevant Cabinet Ministers, Selangor State Exco and ADUN Minister.
