Petition to Save Harmony Fields Reserve: Stop the Proposed Drive-In Cinema Development

Petition to Save Harmony Fields Reserve: Stop the Proposed Drive-In Cinema Development
The issue
To: City of Gosnells Council
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Maddington and surrounding areas, strongly oppose the proposed drive-in cinema development at Harmony Fields Reserve by Rowe Group and Ace Cinemas. This plan to construct a drive-in hub, complete with 800 parking spaces, a limestone wall, and four outdoor movie screens, would transform our cherished green space into a commercial complex that disrupts the local environment, wildlife habitats, and the community.
Harmony Fields Reserve is a valuable green space used daily by families, sports teams, dog walkers, and wildlife enthusiasts. The current proposal would remove 180 trees and cover approximately 7.3 hectares of land with bitumen, permanently altering the area’s natural beauty and introducing significant heat sink concerns. This is not the right way to develop our community.
Our objections include:
Loss of Community Green Space: Harmony Fields is one of the last open areas where residents and wildlife alike can thrive. Transforming this space into a paved parking area with walls would completely alter the natural and welcoming landscape of the reserve.
Impact on Wildlife: Harmony Fields is home to numerous species, including the endangered Carnaby's black cockatoo. Removing trees and disturbing their habitat endangers this species and others that rely on the reserve.
Aesthetic and Environmental Concerns: The proposed 1.8-meter-high limestone wall and extensive fencing would make the reserve feel closed off and restrictive, creating a “prison-like” effect and replacing greenery with concrete. This detracts from the visual and environmental value of the area and increases the heat in an area otherwise shaded by trees.
Noise, Light, and Traffic Disturbances: Operating until 1 a.m. each day, the drive-in cinema would introduce late-night noise, increased light pollution, and significantly higher traffic flow to a residential area, disrupting the lives of nearby residents and damaging the peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere of Harmony Fields.
We ask the City of Gosnells Council to:
Reject the proposal for a drive-in cinema at Harmony Fields Reserve
Explore alternative, community-focused developments that preserve the open green space and natural beauty of the area
Take active steps to protect local wildlife, including the Carnaby's black cockatoo, and maintain Harmony Fields as a space that benefits all residents
By signing this petition, we urge the council to preserve the integrity of Harmony Fields Reserve as a treasured community asset and reject any development that would compromise its natural state.
Together, let’s protect Harmony Fields for future generations!
