Petition to revoke DDOT 17th St. NW, Bike Plan

The Issue

Neighbors mount a campaign to protest the DDOT 17th St., NW, Bike Plan in East Dupont through a commercial district. While we support cycling, we ask for a comprehensive review, a study of alternatives, and a public presentation of the Plan. We encourage consideration of alternate cycle routes, such as 15th St., 18th St. and New Hampshire Ave. Commercial stretches are inappropriate for protected bike lanes which create a hazard to pedestrians - seniors on walkers, toddlers tied together on their way to daycare, the handicapped. We reject the false planning that creates an unworkable design, removing all legal parking spaces and then punishing patrons and residents for parking illegally. Funneling all traffic through one lane is a grave and reckless mistake. We vehemently oppose a bike chute that facilitates traffic through the community at the expense of those who live here. We petition Councilmember Brooke Pinto, the Mayor and DDOT to reject plans which will cripple the economic and social nerve center of our livable/walkable community. We support efforts to bring neighborhoods together in a DC Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans.
