The Issue

We, the undersigned residents, visitors, and supporters of Atascadero, respectfully request that the City of Atascadero reverse the recent decision to rename the Charles Paddock Zoo, and reinstate its former, historically significant name in honor of its founder, Charles Paddock.

The Charles Paddock Zoo has been a part of Atascadero’s heart and history for nearly 70 years. Founded in 1955 by Charles Paddock—a county park ranger known for rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals—the zoo began as a small sanctuary and grew into a local treasure. By 1959, his efforts had expanded into a full-fledged menagerie of over 125 animals, and by 1963, the zoo found its permanent home at Atascadero Lake Park.

When Atascadero became an incorporated city in 1979, it took over the management of the zoo. In 1980, the zoo was officially named the Charles Paddock Zoo in lasting tribute to the man whose compassion and dedication gave birth to it.

The recent decision to strip Charles Paddock’s name from this public institution—without adequate public input—has sparked widespread community dismay. For a city-funded and community-supported facility, decisions of this magnitude should reflect the will of the people.

We therefore call upon the City of Atascadero to:

Restore the name “Charles Paddock Zoo” to honor its founder and the zoo’s historical legacy;
Establish a clear and transparent public process for future decisions involving the renaming of community institutions;
Recognize the importance of preserving local history and civic identity, especially in places funded by and serving the public.
This isn’t just about a name. It’s about honoring the compassion of a man who gave everything to help animals and educate future generations. It's about civic pride and public trust.

Let’s make this right — not just for those who remember Charles Paddock’s legacy, but for all those who will visit the zoo in the years to come.

Hello Petition Supporters, A supporter of this petition recently contacted Mayor Pro Tem Mark Dariz to share their views. We wanted to pass along the Mayor’s response, which we hope you find helpful and informative. Response from Mayor Mark Dariz: Hello Jason and Joe, Attached (below) is the best response I can provide at this time. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) REBRANDING OF CHARLES PADDOCK ZOO TO CENTRAL COAST ZOO WHY THE CHANGE? The reason for the new logo and name is to broaden our community and the support for the Zoo! Many people don’t know where we are located, and because of that, the rebranding and new name will create a larger footprint and shares our Zoo with a larger area, provides more support and more opportunities to be seen! Charles Paddock is an important part of our history and is prominently displayed at the entrance and that area has been named “Charles Paddock Plaza.” Both the archway upon entering and the statue are the first thing you see, and Charles is well represented. It is a priority to continue preserving the history of Charles Paddock and he will always be a part of the legacy at the Zoo! Rebrand started in August 2024 with a local advertising agency, TJA Advertising who assisted in the design and the vision before moving forward with a new name, logo and brand. Outreach started in September of 2024 and included surveying over 250 people, meetings with the Zoo’s major stakeholders, lifetime supporters, long-time County residents, the Friends of the Charles Paddock Zoo, Zoo and City staff, City Council, Chamber of Commerce, Cal Poly University, Atascadero Tourism Business Improvement District, SLO CAL Tourism Marketing District, industry leaders and many others. WHY NOW? Over the past year, the Zoo has established a new team and a new energy, and a new marketing plan that is important to move the Zoo forward. The Zoo’s recent accreditation by the Association of Zoo’s & Aquariums, was another milestone for the Zoo! AZA accreditation is the gold standard in the industry with only 10% of Zoo’s in the world who meet the standards of this achievement, and our Zoo is one of them! The timing is right to take this step forward with a new Marketing plan that starts with the rebranding initiative designed to enhance awareness and the geographic location of the Zoo. From our outreach, Central Coast Zoo, came out to be the clear winner. The name will allow us to cast a wider net for donors, grants, sponsorships and will ultimately provide more support of our Zoo. As part of the Rebrand we have introduced a new educational children's activity book aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of wildlife conservation. We will also launch a new media campaign, educational videos, and promotional tie-ins over the summer. In addition, we will distribute the children’s activity books to the local hotels and placemats at the local restaurants that will be supported with traditional media and digital advertising from July through September. We will also be refreshing our website and social media platforms with the new information and working to activate an Online Portal that we don’t currently have. This will help us increase ticket sales, provide an easier way to donate to animals, sign up for birthday parties, events, tours, Zoo membership, etc. and convenient access and user-friendly ability to expand programs, grow revenue, better manage and grow popular events, and ultimately increase awareness for the Zoo. Is my Charles Paddock Zoo Membership still Valid? Absolutely! If there are any questions not a part of the FAQ, please contact Terrie Banish, Director of Community Services and Promotions at (805) 470-3490 or tbanish@atascadero.org.
